Holdem Position

While playing at a table, players have devised a system wherein they have come out with codes, or nicknames for the different positions involved in poker at the table. There are many names that have been devised to describe the position that you are in on a table. The most common of them are the following, and they are all positions in relation to the dealer.

  • Dealer or 'Button': This place is often regarded as the best position on the table because it means that you get to be the last to act on the flop, turn and river. This is advantageous because you get to analyze the bets that have already been placed on the table without the threat of being bettered when you make your own bet.
  • 'Under The Gun': This is conversely referred to as the worst position on the table. This position seats the person who sits to the left of the big blind and is the first person to take action in a hand. While this is known to be a very bad position, the benefit to this seat is that he will actually have a better position post-flop than the blinds.
  • 'Big Blind': This position is for the person who is sitting to the left of the small blind, unless the game is heads-up.
  • 'Small Blind': This position is for the person who is sitting to directly to the left of the dealer's button, unless the game is being played heads up.
  • 'Cutoff': This position is for the player who is to the right of the button. It is called the 'cutoff' because that position cuts off the dealer's ability to steal the blinds by betting.

One thing that should be remembered is that when the game is being played heads up, the player on the button is the small blind and the other player is the big blind. All other positions will change in relation to the position of the dealer button.

This guide will give you the positions and their names in the game of poker. It is very important to know these positions because it is better to plot your next move knowing the order of game play.
