Technically, it is a game that is classified in between No-Limit Hold Em and Fixed-Limit Hold Em. One of the differences between Pot-Limit Hold Em and No-Limit Hold em is the fact that you cannot bet your whole stack at any point during a hand. You can, however bet the amount in the pot at that time.

The way to determine what the maximum bet is to count all the money in the pot and count all the bets on the table, which includes any call that you make before raising, add them all up, and you get your maximum bet.

Pot-Limit Hold Em

The whole process can be made clearer with the help of some examples.

  • Suppose there is a pot of $20 and you are the first to act on the flop. You will now have the option to either check or bet and you can bet anywhere in between the two amounts of the big blind and the maximum bet. The portion of the bet that you are allowed to make a bet in is known as the 'legal bet'.
  • Now, Suppose there is a pot of $20 again and you are the second person to act on the flop and the first person bets $12. After this, you have the option to either fold, call ($12), or raise the bet. The maximum bet, as previously discussed is $20.
  • If you choose to 'raise', then your minimum raise will be equal to the amount of the previous bet. Hence, your minimum raise in this kind of hand will be $12.
  • In case you are thinking about putting in the maximum bet, then that will be the amount of the pot. in order to do this, you will have to add up the pot to the bet and your call. Once you get that figure, you are allowed to bet that amount as a maximum amount.
  • In addition to that, you can also raise any amount in between the minimum and the maximum amounts.
