Why Some Poker Players Wear Sunglasses

Nowadays, there are quite a few poker tournaments happening with all kinds of people joining in to play. What is peculiar to note is that a lot of these players have some kind of face gear (read: sunglasses) on. Now, the first question that springs to mind is that why would these players need any sunglasses in a semi-lit poker room unless they have some kind of problem with their eyes. But, more often than not, people sport sunglasses in poker rooms and of all shapes and sizes.

While sometimes one wonders why they wear sunglasses, more often than not they have a specific reason behind it. You will see amateurs wearing shades sometimes just to emulate the professionals, but the fact of the matter is that there actually is a point in wearing shades during a game of poker and many professionals employ this technique to use it to their advantage.

Why Some Poker Players Wear Sunglasses

Now, we must realize that there are professionals on the table who are constantly observing our every move and that we must be careful with what kind of signals our eyes send out. They can read those vibes and plan their moves accordingly. As an example, take an instance of a player who looks up at the flop and then immediately back down to his chips and then back away again is guilty of showing and telling everyone that the flop has helped his cards. Now, sending out these signals cannot be good for your game, because the other players will be able to predict your moves. On the other hand, if the same player keeps staring at the flop then you will know that the player does not have a good hand and the he is trying to figure out another combination that will help him along the game. According to some studies, some players are actually skilled enough to tell when player's pupils dilate to tell whether he has a good hand or not. Whether this is actually true or not is something that we still have to find out. By simply concealing your eyes with a pair of shades, your opponents will not be able to deduce anything from your facial expressions.

The next factor that you must take into consideration is the fact that sunglasses make you look intimidating. By concealing your eyes, your opponents do not know what they are missing. A big part of deducing what a persons emotions are come through his or her eyes and the fact that the pupils dilate every now and then or the brow furrows under pressure. There are many tell-tale signs of human emotions that express themselves through the face and by covering it up, you are making yourself emotionally dead. This is a valuable trait amongst poker players and one that can make you a tad bit intimidating to other players.

Another factor that swings in favor of the sunglasses is the fact that when you are new to the game, it helps you hide behind the glasses. The shades are a brilliant way to mask who you actually are when you are learning the ropes to a game. It is always easier to learn when you feel invisible due to the pressure of feeling less important or less intelligent in comparison to the other players. There are many pros to the habit of wearing sunglasses. Wearing them while you are new at the game is a great way to make yourself feel more comfortable while you are playing. Your opponents glaring and breathing down your neck can never be a good stimulus to learn and this is something that will only further your learning process in Poker.

These are the primary reasons why Poker players sometimes wear sunglasses.
